Indumenta is the journal of the Museo del Traje. Centro de Investigación del Patrimonio Etnológico, a state-owned museum which comes under the Department of Culture and Sport’s Directorate General of Fine Arts. It is an annual, digital, open access publication, dedicated to the history of clothing, fashion and textiles.
One of the Museo’s objectives is to create a cutting-edge communication channel in response to the growing interest in studies on fashion and clothing. Temporary clothing exhibitions, which are on the rise, the increasing activity of museums dedicated to the sector and the importance of the textile industry for the economy and in everyday life support the need to provide a platform that forms connections and creates critical mass on textile studies from every angle.
In this new phase, started in 2020, the journal aims to emerge as a platform capable of publishing work by historians, philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists, museologists and researchers from other fields on the history of clothing, fabrics and fashion. Indumenta incorporates the different academic perspectives that have made this a constantly expanding field.
To this end it has a multidisciplinary editorial team and an editorial board comprising specialists from the world of museums, universities and research in the journal’s area of interest. It has new rules for submitting originals and implements a selection and assessment process for work submitted based on quality and the scientific value of the articles.
The journal publishes articles on the history of clothing and personal image; the relationship between clothing and the body, gender and identity; the textile and garment industry, their commercial and technological development and sustainability; shopping and the subjective experience of fashion; the history of taste and the processes of cultural diffusion; fashion theory and criticism; the relationship between fashion and art and crafts production systems; the strategies and subsidiary fields of the clothing and beauty industries; advertising, photography, digital distribution, professions linked to the sector..., and any other subject that makes a relevant contribution to our knowledge of textiles, clothing and fashion.
